Australia have punted Ed Cowan and Mitchell Starc from their line-up for the second Test at Lord’s starting on Thursday.
Top order batsman Usman Khawaja gets a long-awaited opportunity to return to the side, while brilliant outswing bowler Ryan Harris has been brought into the attack.
Harris will take the new ball after England won the toss and elected to bat.
Alastair Cook had no hesitation in sending Australia into the field, after an explosive batting performance to win the corresponding 2009 Ashes Test at Lord’s virtually won England the match.
On that occasion Cook and Andrew Strauss had England 0-126 at lunch.
Australia will be hoping they’ve learnt lessons from that experience as they fight to square up the series.
Overcoming the heartbreak of their first Test loss in Trent Bridge will be no easy task, and a strong start is imperative for the tourists.
Harris will play a vital role in his first Test in over a year.
Injuries have curtailed the amount of international cricket he’s played, but Harris possesses an outstanding Test record and his swing and pace should be ideally suited to Lord’s.
Starc may be paying the price for a poor showing from fellow left-armer Mitchell Johnson in 2009, when he was taken apart by the England batsmen.
Harris is known for his control and will be hoping to utilise the tinge of grass on the wicket.
Khawaja hasn’t played Test cricket since 2011, despite being the reserve batsman for a number of tours since.
The 26-year-old will have plenty of pressure on him to perform immediately, with David Warner set to be available for the third Test at Old Trafford.
Cowan’s dropping could spell the end of his Test career.
Already demoted as an opener, the 31-year-old now falls behind Khawaja and most likely Warner in the queue.
England have made one change from the side that won by 14-runs at Trent Bridge, with Tim Bresnan replacing Steve Finn in the attack.
Australia have an outstanding record at Lord’s, and have only lost twice at the venue since 1934.
