Clarke salutes his new Spartan life

Michael Clarke’s lifestyle is trendy, tattooed and blonde-tipped – but not spartan.

Until now.

The Australian captain has saluted his most recent success with a cricket bat plastered with light blue stickers of his latest sponsor, Spartan Sports.

Clarke struck his 210 in the fourth Test against India in Adelaide with the MC 329.

The bat is named after Clarke’s unbeaten 329 – made with a bare bat – in the Sydney Test a couple of weeks ago.

The sporting goods company based in Wollongong, south of Sydney, is believed to have forked out almost a million dollars to have Clarke carry their bat.

And the Test skipper is only too happy to talk about it, while perhaps hiding a million-dollar smile.

“I’m honoured to be with Spartan, they’re a wonderful company,” Clarke gushed on Wednesday.

Accepting the sponsorship was “a lot more than stickers on my bat”, he said, signalling a sports wear range was in the offing.

“It’s having the opportunity to not only provide cricket equipment for the guys playing at the highest level, but down to kids playing beach cricket, having the opportunity to provide gear for them,” Clarke said.

“I’m really keen to do stuff outside of cricket and produce a fitness range and they’re really interested in that.”

Clarke had been sponsored by Slazenger since age 13.

And his switch had a common link: Spartan Sports consultant Ian Davis, the former Test opener who was formerly a senior executive at Slazenger.
