Clarke out, Aussies bowl first

Michael Clarke has been ruled out of Australia’s final Champions Trophy pool match against Sri Lanka at The Oval, with George Bailey to again skipper the side.

Clarke trained on Saturday and Sunday but rushing him back for this match was considered too risky for the star batsman.

Australia have won the toss and elected to field first in a match where they must win by a huge margin to qualify for the semi-finals.

A mammoth win where they will most likely need to bowl Sri Lanka out in less than 30 overs, is needed for Australia to be any chance of leapfrogging New Zealand on run-rate to progress into the semi-final stage of the tournament.

Australia are chasing their third consecutive Champions Trophy crown, but a tumultuous week on and off the field has made their job extremely difficult.

Sri Lanka only need to win the match to progress past New Zealand into the semis.

England are the only team guaranteed of qualifying from pool A.

Australia lost their opening match to England and their second game against New Zealand was abandoned due to rain.

Star batsman David Warner was suspended and fined for a nightclub fight in Birmingham, taking the focus away from the cricket for Clarke’s side.
