Chris Martin dropped for second Test

Veteran New Zealand seam bowler Chris Martin has been dropped for the second cricket Test against India starting in Bangalore on Friday.

Martin makes way for Tim Southee in the only change to the starting 11 that succumbed by an innings and 115 runs with four sessions to spare in the first Test at Hyderabad.

The 37-year-old struggled on a pitch that suited spin, taking 1-76 from 27 overs in his 70th Test.

Coach Mike Hesson resisted making any other changes despite the humbling. Other options included introducing pace bowler Neil Wagner, uncapped legspinner Tarun Nethula or batsman/wicketkeeper BJ Watling.

Captain Ross Taylor said a change of attitude would be more important than any personnel switch. And dealing aggressively with the spin threat of Indian spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha, who took 18 wickets between them, would be vital.

“It’s never easy when you lose a Test by over an innings. We need to forget about it as quickly as possible and find ways of playing Ashwin and Ojha,” said Taylor.
