Police have questioned a Pakistani national, detained for allegedly attempting to fix or influence a match in the Twenty20 Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).

Mirpur Police official Munshi Mosharraf told The Associated Press on Wednesday that Sajid Khan, 36, was detained by Bangladesh Cricket Board security officials on Sunday while trying to access the players’ zone during a game between the Chittagong Kings and the Barisal Burners at Dhaka’s Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

Mosharraf said a case has been filed against Khan on charges of attempting to “make money by using mobile phone and through cheating tied to BPL affairs”.

He said Khan was handed over to police by the cricket board and was later taken away by detectives.

“We believe he will be brought back to us after the questioning is over,” said Mosharraf.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is aware of the case and has been in contact with its counterparts in Bangladesh.

“Yes, we are in contact with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) but, so far, we are waiting for the details on the inquiry,” Subhan Ahmed, the PCB’s chief operating officer, told AP in a text message. “We want to keep track of it.”

Mesbahuddin Serniabat, the BCB’s chief security official, said on Wednesday that he didn’t have any new information regarding the case against Khan.

“We had kept our eyes on him for a few days, and we detained him on Sunday for his suspicious attitude and movement,” Serniabat said. “Now it’s up to police … we are no more dealing with it, at least for now.”

Local media reports say on Khan’s mobile telephone, security officers found the bank account number of a Chittagong Kings player and the email address of another who is playing for the Dhaka Gladiators.

Mosharraf and Serniabat each declined to comment on specifics.
