Victoria have ruined Queensland’s Sheffield Shield final hopes with a stout batting display on the final day of the regular season.
The Bulls needed to take 10 second-innings wickets at the MCG on Friday to have any chance of leapfrogging Western Australia and qualifying for the decider, but fell well short and had to settle for a draw.
The Bushrangers were 2-314 when play was stopped with an hour left before the scheduled finish time.
The result means NSW will play WA in the final in Canberra from next Friday.
Resuming at 0-109, Victoria needed to add another 164 runs just to make Queensland – who racked up a first-innings total of 8(dec)-483 – bat again.
With the Redbacks suffering a heavy defeat at the hands of Tasmania in Hobart and NSW squeaking past WA in a thriller to earn the right to host the final, the Bulls needed all six points to join the Blues, but couldn’t get the job done.
Opener Rob Quiney proved a major thorn in Queensland’s side with his unbeaten innings of 143 the highlight of Victoria’s second innings.
David Hussey (37) was with him at the crease when play was stopped.
Luke Feldman was the pick of the Bulls’ bowlers with 1-34 from 16 overs, but it was a long and forgettable day for the visitors in the field.
Victoria had resumed at 0-109 on the final day, trailing Queensland’s first-innings total of 8-483 by 164 runs, and the Bulls got the start they were after when Feldman removed Dean Russ lbw on 47 in the second over.
But Marcus Stoinis (74) joined Quiney and the pair put on a 148-run partnership that effectively put a final berth out of reach for the visitors.
