Queensland are edging towards first-innings points in their Sheffield Shield match against NSW in Brisbane where Test allrounder Shane Watson has reaggravated a calf injury.
At lunch on day two, in reply to NSW’s total of 184, the Bulls are five for 158 at Allan Border Field, requiring another 27 runs for the two first-innings points.
Resuming on Saturday at 3-66, Queensland dominated the morning session apart from a five-minute period when they lost Joe Burns for 64 and Usman Khawaja for 54.
The pair produced easily the best partnership of the match with a 110-run stand after coming together late on the opening day at 3-22.
Nothing appeared to be going the Blues’ way when Watson finished his first over of the day and pulled up with calf soreness which prompted him to leave the field.
Burns fell to spinner Stephen O’Keefe next ball before Khawaja was caught behind in the following over off Doug Bollinger.
Bulls’ captain Chris Hartley (19 not out) and fellow left-hander Nathan Reardon (eight not out) then took the home side through to lunch.
Test hopeful Mitchell Starc has failed to gain a breakthrough in his seven overs while Bollinger is the only bowler to pick up two wickets.
