Bulls lose early wicket v SA in Shield

Recalled South Australian paceman Peter George struck early to leave Queensland 1-40 at tea on Wednesday’s second day of the Sheffield Shield match in Adelaide.

George, overlooked for the initial two Shield games this season, claimed the wicket of opener Alex Kemp for eight as the Bulls replied to SA’s first innings of 9(dec)-402.

Kemp was unlucky to be given out lbw when playing forward to a George delivery which cut back off the seam and appeared to be heading down the leg-side.

Kemp’s dismissal, with the score on 16, brought Usman Khawaja to the crease and the left-hander moved untroubled to 14 not out at tea, with Wade Townsend unbeaten on 18.

Townsend received a let-off just before the break when first slip Michael Klinger dropped a low chance from Dan Christian’s bowling.

Earlier, the Redbacks declared about 45 minutes after lunch following Callum Ferguson’s highest first-class score.

Ferguson made 164, surpassing his previous best of 132, in an innings which underpinned SA’s healthy total.

The stylish right-hander combined with wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Ludeman in a 162-run stand for SA’s sixth wicket.

Ludeman made 78, while Bulls paceman Ben Cutting took three wickets.

Queensland skipper James Hopes, spinner Nathan Hauritz and quick Luke Feldman each claimed two victims.
