Broad handed Bulls one-day captaincy

Opener Ryan Broad will take the reins of Queensland in Saturday’s crucial one-day match against Western Australia at the Gabba after being named skipper for the first time.

Broad steps in as regular captain James Hopes (knee) aims to make his comeback next week against Tasmania, while stand-in skipper Peter Forrest is in Perth with the Australian squad.

Also missing from the team is all-rounder Michael Neser, who will be sidelined for at least a month with an ankle injury suffered during this week’s Sheffield Shield loss to WA.

Broad said while he doesn’t expect to hold onto the job for a long stint, he was determined to lead his team to success in what shapes as a must-win game for the Bulls’ hope of reaching the final.

“It’s an honour and a privilege to do the job,” he said on Friday.

“It will mean a few adjustments but I expect it to be a strictly short-term role rather than one I will be doing for a while.

“The best thing to do will be to enjoy the experience.”

In-form fast bowler Alister McDermott goes into the clash as the competition’s leading wicket-taker so far this season and is coming off his career-best 7-24 for the Bulls in their thrilling one-wicket Shield loss to WA.

Squad: Ryan Broad (capt), Joe Burns, Ben Cutting, Ben Dunk, Cameron Gannon, Brad Ipson, Chris Lynn, Alister McDermott, Steve Paulsen, Nathan Reardon, Andrew Robinson, Chris Swan
