Blues fight back against Tas in Shield

Steve Smith and Brad Haddin spearheaded a NSW fightback on the first afternoon of the Sheffield Shield cricket match against Tasmania at Bankstown Oval on Wednesday.

The Blues slumped to 3-7 after winning the toss, but recovered to reach 5-167 at tea, with Haddin on 43 and Moises Henriques on 21.

Smith (64) featured in partnerships of 57 with Michael Clarke (37) and 60 with Haddin.

Wicketkeeper Haddin also combined with Henriques for an unbroken sixth-wicket stand of 43.

Smith struck seven boundaries before being run out, when James Faulkner deflected a shot from Haddin onto the stumps to catch him short of his ground at the bowlers end.

It was the only wicket to fall in the middle session after NSW resumed at 4-86 following lunch.

In the first session, former Bankstown junior Jackson Bird (2-31) dismissed Peter Nevill (1) and Nic Maddinson (0) and caught Scott Henry (0) in the slips off Luke Butterworth (1-18).

Clarke looked in good touch, striking six boundaries in a fluent innings before being bowled by Adam Maher (1-37).
