Birmingham ODI abandoned due to rain

Rain has forced the abandonment of the third one-day international between Australia and England at Edgbaston.

England were struggling at 3-59 when wet weather forced the players off the field at 3.34pm local time (12.34am AEST), 15.1 overs into the hosts’ innings.

The wet weather set in and umpires were forced to call the game off just after 7pm local time (4am AEST).

The non-result means the series is effectively reduced to three games after game one in Leeds was washed out without a ball being bowled.

Australia hold a 1-0 lead heading into the final two games, in Cardiff on Saturday and Southampton on Monday, after an 88-run win in Manchester on Sunday.

While Australia were a long way off winning Wednesday’s match, the tourists would be left disappointed after putting themselves in a strong position early.

After Michael Clarke won the toss and chose to bowl, England’s innings was off to a horror start when opener Michael Carberry was run out for one due to a calamitous mix-up with Kevin Pietersen.

Both openers were gone when Pietersen (six) scooped a poor shot to George Bailey off Mitchell Johnson’s bowling.

Johnson had Jonathan Trott (28 not out) in all sorts early and was unlucky not to dismiss him lbw on two occasions, with the batsman successfully reviewing one decision and surviving an Australian challenge.

With England looking to mount a recovery, the introduction of all-round Adam Voges into the attack worked a treat and he had Joe Root (12) caught and bowled in his first over before the rain arrived.
