Australian women face big T20 challenge

Australia’s strike weapon Ellyse Perry knocked over the West Indies’ two batting superpowers in the women’s World Twenty20 semi-final and the pace bowler will face a similar challenge in Sunday’s final.

After dismissing Stafanie Taylor and Deandra Dottin for three and six in Friday’s win, Perry is expected to take the new ball for the decider against England in Colombo.

The England team will be relying on big contributions from skipper Charlotte Edwards and Sarah Taylor, the leading run scorers in women’s T20 international history.

The 2009 champions England have won 17 of their 18 matches in 2012 while Australia are depending on their big-game experience as defending champions after their victory over New Zealand in the 2010 final in Barbados.

Australia lost to England in the group stage of the 2012 tournament in Sri Lanka but skipper Jodie Fields has faith in her bowling attack which includes Julie Hunter, the leading wicket-taker in the tournament with nine victims at 7.66 including 5-22 in the semi-final.

Lisa Sthalekar top-scored with 23 in Australia’s 28-run semi-final win and also conceded just six runs from four overs of offspin.

“England are a top-class side,” said Fields, who missed the 2010 final through injury.

“‘Lottie’ (Edwards) and Sarah Taylor are world-class players.

“But I think you have to make sure you plan well for all the players in the team. If we come out and focus on our game, and what we can do well, we could have a successful match.”

Edwards has stressed the need for her side to do the basics well.

“We’re peaking at the right time,” the England captain said.

“We’re very lucky that we’ve got the two best teams in the tournament in the final. Hopefully, we can put on a good spectacle for the women’s game, which is really important when we have these double-headers.”

The women’s final (2000 AEDT) will precede the men’s final between Sri Lanka and the West Indies (0030 Monday AEDT).
