Australia vs India Preview

Despite the catastrophe in Sydney, Australia still remain the short-priced $1.50 favourites to clinch the series ahead of Friday’s first ball at the Gabba.

The Aussies will likely head to Brisbane unchanged after the top of the order found some form last week thanks to the inclusion of debutant Will Pucovski and Steve Smith’s century in the first innings.

After being bowled out for 244 on day one, India also has to feel good about the way Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara, Rishabh Pant and Ravi Ashwin all responded on their way to one of the most thrilling draws in Test Match history.

With the ledger still square at 1-1, it’s become painfully clear that Australia needs to fire on all cylinders if they wish to stretch their unbeaten Test Match record at the Gabba to 29.

Captain Tim Paine has been the source of scrutiny all week after dropping several chances in Sydney, a problem that carried over from the loss in Melbourne a week earlier.

Two or three fielding errors are forgivable, but as we’ve seen time and time again, Australia cannot afford to give world-class batsmen like Pujara or Ajinkya Rahane a second chance.

It goes without saying, but the Aussies also need more from their bowling attack in Brisbane.

Mitchell Starc failed to find any swing, let alone a wicket in the second innings last Monday, while Nathan Lyon finished the Third Test wicket-less on what is normally a pretty spin-friendly pitch.

For India, the job is even simpler: keep the momentum rolling.

After surviving 131 overs on day five in Sydney, it’s safe to say the Indians have a slight edge heading into the Brisbane Test – something that could prove crucial with both sides playing on a short turnaround.

Unfortunately, though, momentum might be all India has.

The visitors now find themselves in the midst of a severe injury crisis that not only puts them at long odds to win the Fourth Test, but also their upcoming series against England.

Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah joins the likes of Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav and KL Rahul on the sidelines, while there’s equal concern for Ashwin, who has pulled up sore with a back injury.

Given the fact the Aussies are undefeated at the Gabba dating all the way back to 1988, this should shape up to be a comfortable Australia victory on a much more friendly Brisbane wicket.
