Australia to bat first in final Ashes Test

Australian captain Michael Clarke has won the toss and elected to bat first in the fifth Ashes Test at The Oval.

Debutant James Faulkner was presented with his baggy green cap by legspinning great Shane Warne in an on-field ceremony.

Faulkner comes in for Usman Khawaja who was dropped.

England have also sprung two selection shocks in their XI, with left-arm orthodox spinner Simon Kerrigan and fast bowler Chris Woakes handed debuts.

The pair come in for Tim Bresnan who is injured and Jonny Bairstow who was left out on form.

It’s the first time since the 2009 Ashes Test at Cardiff that England have played two spinners at home, with Graeme Swann to work in tandem with Kerrigan on a dry Oval wicket.

The two 24-year-olds were presented with their England cap by Ian Botham.

It’s the second toss Clarke has won this series, the other was the third Test at Old Trafford which Australia dominated, but ended in a draw.

So far the team winning the toss is yet to lose a Test this series – England have batted first in their three wins at Trent Bridge, Lord’s and Chester-le-Street.

England are aiming to win 4-0 at home for the first time in Ashes history, with Australia desperate for a win to break an eight-Test victory drought.

The balance of both teams is interesting, with a batsman dropped from both.

Faulkner’s inclusion sees Shane Watson revert to No.3 and Brad Haddin move up to No.6.

Australian coach Darren Lehmann lit the fuse for a fiery encounter after labelling England fast bowler Stuart Broad a “cheat” on radio and calling on Aussie fans to send him home in tears during the return Ashes series in the summer.

Australia: David Warner, Chris Rogers, Shane Watson, Michael Clarke (capt), Steve Smith, Brad Haddin, James Faulkner, Mitchell Starc, Peter Siddle, Ryan Harris, Nathan Lyon

England: Alastair Cook, Joe Root, Jonathan Trott, Kevin Pietersen, Ian Bell, Matt Prior, Stuart Broad, Chris Woakes, Graeme Swann, James Anderson, Simon Kerrigan
