Australia deserve a win: Haddin

Australian vice-captain Brad Haddin says Australia deserve to win a Test this Ashes series.

The veteran wicketkeeper said England were clearly the better side, hence their 3-0 lead, but was adamant the Australians have played well enough to come away with something from the series.

Australia have been in the contest in Trent Bridge and Chester-le-Street before falling at the final hurdle, while at Old Trafford they seemed destined to win until rain intervened.

The tourists are in danger of becoming the first Australian team to lose a series 4-0 on English soil, but Haddin is hoping justice prevails in the fifth Test at The Oval.

“… We think we’ve played good enough cricket on this tour to deserve a win in a Test match,” Haddin said.

“There’s a lot of belief in the change room we can win this last Test match.

“We’ve been in positions over the Test series to put ourselves in a position to win Test matches, but we just haven’t been good enough in the good moments.

“England deserve to be where they are 3-0 up so it’s up to us to see if we can build a little bit on the good things we’ve done and see if we put it all together not just in patches.”

Meanwhile, Shane Watson is set to fulfil his allrounder duties as expected on Wednesday.

Watson bowled in the nets in Northampton and again at The Oval on Monday and appears to have fully recovered from a right groin problem.

There are also reports that back-up wicketkeeper Matt Wade is an outside chance to be included as a batsman.

Wade hasn’t played all series, but did score a solid 38 not out for the Australians in a two-day tour match against the England Lions last week.

Haddin said Wade had been working hard on his game but would find it challenging if he was to come in as a fieldsman.

“I’ve dealt with it a couple of times in one-dayers and I was extremely nervous. You don’t have your gloves to fall back on if you get a good one early,” he said.

“We haven’t finalised where we’re at. Obviously everyone in the squad, their name will come up.”

Australia appears certain to make two changes for the fifth Test, with Khawaja to make way and Mitchell Starc to come in for Jackson Bird in the bowling attack.

If Wade was to come in for Khawaja there would have to be a reshuffle in the batting order, but the logical one-for-one swap would be to bring in Phil Hughes.
