Australia will seek to bat India out of the contest when day two of the fourth Test starts in Sydney, with Steve Smith and Shane Watson eyeing centuries.

The hosts will resume on 2-348, having dominated day one at the SCG where David Warner and Chris Rogers shared a 200-run stand.

Smith is on 82, continuing an incredible run in the four-Test series that has already netted over 650 runs.

The 25-year-old last week became the first Australian to score tons in his first two Tests as captain and looks well placed to make it three from three.

Watson is on 61, seeking to post his first Test century since 2013.

“He really deserves a big one … hopefully he gets it,” Warner said of Watson.

“The amount of time and effort he puts into training is unbelievable.

“Him and Smithy are doing a fantastic job at the moment and hopefully they can pile on the runs.”

Warner wasn’t getting carried away with his side’s stellar start to their final Test before preparations for the one-day World Cup begin in earnest.

“It’s going to be challenging for us to take 10 wickets as well,” Warner said.

“It has been a tough day for India, but we have to come out and put as many runs on the board as we can.”

Warner noted there “wasn’t much chat” on day one, with both sides toning down the verbal spats.

“I think both teams know it is about playing smart cricket,” he said.

“It is always good to have a verbal contest out there but both teams have been playing fantastic.”
