Aust side ‘struggling’ ahead of Test: Lee

Fast bowling great Brett Lee says some of Australia’s players are “still struggling” as they prepare to take to Adelaide Oval for the first Test on Tuesday.

Speaking on the Nine Network, Lee predicted there would be some “tough moments” during Australia’s first match since the sudden death of batsman Phillip Hughes.

“A few of the guys are still struggling,” Lee said prior to the start of day one.

“But I’m sure once they put on that baggy green cap, I’m sure that Phil will be with them.”

The Sydney Sixers player said he had already spotted young cricket fans walking around with Hughes’ Test cap number, 408, painted on their shirts.

He said the Australian side would maintain their aggressive style despite the “horrible couple of weeks” they’d endured.

“The game must go on – I think that’s what Phil would’ve wanted,” he said.

“He would’ve wanted the fast bowlers to go out and keep attacking – he was an attacking batsman.

“He’d be looking down I think going, `you want Mitchell Johnson to steam in and go fast’.”

Skipper Michael Clarke’s leadership would help the grieving team get through the emotional Test, he added.

Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland agreed Clarke’s presence had brought the side back to full strength.

“It’s pretty hard to hold him back,” Sutherland said of the captain, who had battled a niggling hamstring injury in the lead-up to the series.

“(But) he’s been keen from the outset.”

As the Test squad prepare to take to the Adelaide Oval green, Sean Abbott is also poised to return for the NSW Blues’ Sheffield Shield clash with Queensland.

Hughes has been named 13th man for the Test side.
