A late innings rally from George Bailey has helped Australia set England 146 to win the rain-shortened fifth and final one-day international in Manchester.
Bailey, coming in at number seven, hit an unbeaten 46 from 41 balls, including a six over long on in the last over from James Anderson and three boundaries in the penultimate over off Stuart Broad, as Australia finished strongly in their seven for 145 in an allotted 32 overs.
Australia, 3-0 down in the series and seeking a consolation win, suffered a mid-innings collapse after David Warner and Matthew Wade put on 43 for the first wicket.
Warner was the first to go for a run a ball 32 when he missed a sweep against recalled off-spinner James Tredwell and was lbw.
He showed glimpses of his best form with a six over long on off Broad.
The struggling Peter Forrest was next, run out for three in 14 balls, trying for a second as Samit Patel’s throw from the deep left him a foot short of his ground.
Forrest, a candidate for the Test team, has managed 15 runs in three innings.
Left-hander Wade, dropped twice, failed to make England pay for their lapses and was defeated by a beautiful off-break from Tredwell to be stumped for 12 in 41 balls.
Australia were unable to stem the flurry of wickets and the score became four for 55 when skipper Michael Clarke was run out by Eoin Morgan, denying a quick single at point.
Occasional medium pacer Ravi Bopara added the wickets of Steve Smith and David Hussey as Australia struggled for a meaningful partnership.
Smith briefly added some momentum with 21 from 20 balls but he clipped Bopara down the leg side to wicketkeeper Craig Kieswetter.
And in Bopara’s next over Hussey tried to dab him down to the third man boundary only to get too fine a deflection and was caught behind for nine.
Bopara finished with two wickets for eight runs in his four overs.
England are seeking a record tenth successive win in one-day internationals, after sealing a seventh straight series win at home in ODIs.
