Australia have battled their way to be 3-132 at tea on day one of the second Test against the West Indies in Trinidad.
At the break Shane Watson was not out on 44 while Michael Clarke had reached 21 after the pair added 49 runs in an unbroken fourth-wicket stand from 23.3 overs following the dismissal of Ricky Ponting in the sixth over after lunch.
Ponting found himself squared up by a rising delivery from Kemar Roach (2-58), the ball kissing the edge of his bat before bursting through Carlton Baugh’s gloves only for captain Darren Sammy to snatch the rebound.
The former captain reluctantly left the Queen’s Park Oval after the catch, his dismissal for seven adding to his four and 14 in the first Test in Barbados last week and leaving Australia 3-83.
In the first session opening pair David Warner and Ed Cowan both made starts before falling for 29 and 28 respectively.
Warner, who survived a confusing situation in the first over when he was given out caught behind only for Sammy to retract the appeal, eventually fell edging offspinner Shane Shillingford (1-20) to Sammy at first slip.
Cowan battled his way almost to lunch before falling 15 minutes before the break, trapped lbw by the impressive Roach.
Shillingford bowled 16 overs straight either side of the lunch break, in his first Test since late 2010.
