Australia are 2-74 at lunch on day one of the second Test against the West Indies in Trinidad after opener Ed Cowan was dismissed just before the break.
Cowan fell 15 minutes before the lunch break when he was trapped lbw by fast bowler Kemar Roach (1-35) on 28.
The Tasmanian called for a review but the decision was upheld.
At the break Shane Watson was unbeaten on 10 with Ricky Ponting not out five.
Cowan’s opening partner David Warner (29) had earlier fallen in Windies’ spinner Shane Shillingford’s first over of the match, caught by Darren Sammy at slip following a 53-run stand with Cowan.
Shillingford, playing his first Test since November 2010, finished the session with 1-4 off six overs and got some turn out of the dry Queen’s Park Oval wicket to suggest spin will be a big factor in the match.
Warner was involved in a confusing early incident when he survived a caught behind appeal despite being given out by umpire Marais Erasmus.
Windies’ skipper Sammy withdrew the appeal because the ball had not carried to wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh and Erasmus reversed his decision.
Television replays showed Warner had not edged the ball but also indicated if the appeal had been reviewed by the Australian batsman, he would have been given out lbw.
Earlier, both teams announced two changes to their line-ups with Ryan Harris and Peter Siddle omitted from Australia’s line-up for Michael Beer and James Pattinson while Kirk Edwards and Devendra Bishoo were left out by the Windies.
Siddle was ruled out with back stiffness while Harris was rested for the fresher legs of Pattinson despite his man of the match efforts in Barbados.
Edwards was replaced by Kieran Powell after injuring his knee in training while Bishoo, who was disappointing in the first Test, was dropped for offie Shillingford.
