Aussies will adapt without Watto: Rogers

Australian opener Chris Rogers believes his side’s resilience has them well placed to deal with the late scratching of Shane Watson.

A 5-0 drubbing of England was the perfect tune-up for a three-match battle with the world’s No.1 Test side, but Australia’s preparation since landing in South Africa has been nothing short of terrible.

Rain caused havoc in their initial base at Potchefstroom, where a four-day tour match was cancelled two days in advance.

The squad shifted to Johannesburg, and trained at Centurion where the outdoor nets were still soaked from showers and unable to be used early on.

Then came two days of centre-wicket practice at the Wanderers, where the side had to use the same pitch South Africa had scuffed up during their own three-day warm-up game.

To top things off, star allrounder Watson on Saturday night (AEDT) was ruled out of the opening Test due to a calf injury.

“We’ve been flooded out of one place and conditions have been a bit difficult in others. But we’ve kept talking about how we’ve got to make the most of every opportunity,” Rogers said.

“I think we are.

“We’re still enjoying it. The guys are still having a laugh and having fun.

“He (Watson) has been an important player in our side of late, so that’s going to cause a few changes but we have to adapt.”

Rogers did not attempt to downplay just how much of a loss Watson would be on Wednesday when the series starts in Centurion.

“His batting is important to us, but then he can give us a few overs and he catches them at first slip,” he said.

“He’s an integral part of our side. These things happen and you have to move on quickly.”

Alex Doolan is considered the frontrunner to take Watson’s place at first drop.

Rogers spent time in the middle with him on Saturday and was confident of the Tasmanian being ready to debut.

“He’s a class player, I’ve seen him improve now over a few years and, particularly of late, I’ve thought this guy can definitely play,” he said.

“I think he’s ready. It’s not going to be easy facing this attack but I think he’s got the game plan to succeed.”
