Aussies to bat first in third Ashes Test

Australia will bat first in the third Ashes Test at Edgbaston, where they will seek to take a 2-1 lead in the series.

Michael Clarke opted to bat first under overcast skies.

“There might be something in it this morning,” Clarke said.

The team that won the toss has won the Test in 16 of the past 17 Ashes clashes.

Australia named an unchanged XI as expected, with Chris Rogers passed fit.

Rogers retired hurt on day four of the second Test due to an alarming dizzy spell.

England recalled Steve Finn for Mark Wood, who has an ankle injury.

Finn has not played a Test since recording match figures of 2-117 from 25 overs against Australia in 2013 at Trent Bridge.

He was selected for the 2013-14 Ashes, but failed to play a game and was sent home because his bowling wasn’t good enough.

“He’s had his troubles over the last year, but the character he’s shown to fight back is what we need,” Alastair Cook said.

Cook was also keen to bat first, but backed his side’s bowlers to bounce back after being mauled by Rogers and Steve Smith at Lord’s.

“There’s been a bit of rain around the last couple of days. Hopefully we can make the most of it,” he said.
