Aussies loved my sledging: Kohli

Virat Kohli declared Australian crowds have loved his ‘in your face’ attitude this summer, after India batted out a deserved draw in the fourth Test at the SCG on Saturday.

The Indian captain’s verbal stoushes with the Australians have been a feature of the Border-Gavaskar trophy, something Kohli said he has enjoyed during Australia’s 2-0 series win.

Kohli used the chatter to successfully spur him as he became India’s highest run-getter in a series with 692 runs at an average of 86.5.

Last time he toured Australia Kohli allowed crowd reaction to get under his skin and was fined for a one-fingered saluted, but this summer he said he felt he earned their respect.

“Last time around I had a couple of incidents, but I think this time around I know they’ve booed me but they’ve liked the way the team has played,” Kohli said.

“They like it when I go out there and I get a bit annoyed with the opposition you can say, I won’t use any other word.

“It’s been enjoyable.

“To have a challenge of overcoming the whole Australian crowd and 11 Australian players who badly want to irritate me or get me out.

“It’s been a challenge but it’s something that I’ve enjoyed and it’s brought out the best from me.

“I’ve really enjoyed myself and obviously the competition from the Australian team as well.

“There’s a lot of things that went on during the series but eventually they all shook hands and we respect the way they played and both teams mutually know that this was a strong fight and both teams know that both teams enjoyed it equally.”

Kohli said an ability to better deal with the pressure had produced his best Test performances.

“I used to expect a lot out of myself, and unnecessarily put pressure on myself now I believe in myself,” he said.
