Australia have made the perfect start to the West Indies’ second innings as they bid to win the third and final Test in Dominica.
At lunch on day four the Windies are 1-2 chasing an improbable 370 for victory, with opener Adrian Barath the man dismissed.
Kieran Powell, promoted to opener, was not out on nought at the break while teenager Kraigg Brathwaite was unbeaten on two.
Barath was brilliantly caught at square leg by a diving Ed Cowan for his first Test duck off Ben Hilfenhaus (1-0) as Australia made the most of a half-hour session at the Windies before the break.
Earlier, Australia were bowled out for 259 after adding 59 runs to their overnight score of 6-200.
Windies spinner Shane Shillingford created some history on Thursday at his home ground by taking 4-100 in Australia’s second innings to become the first West Indian spinner since 1966 to take 10 wickets in a Test.
But the 29-year-old’s efforts are likely to be in vain as Mitchell Starc scored 21 to lift Australia’s lead past 350.
Starc had a stand of 22 with Nathan Lyon (12no) for the last wicket which would have frustrated the Windies after they removed Michael Hussey, Ryan Harris and Hilfenhaus in quick succession.
Hussey fell for 32 when he was caught sharply at first slip by Windies’ skipper Darren Sammy for Shillingford’s ninth wicket of the Test.
Narsingh Deonarine (3-45) removed Harris (nine) before Shillingford got the Windsor Park crowd on its feet by emulating the great Lance Gibbs with a 10-wicket match tally when Hilfenhaus was athletically caught by Brathwaite at silly point.
Windies’ quick Kemar Roach came into the attack and promptly ended Lyon and Starc’s stand by bowling Starc to claim his third wicket.
