Aussie women confident before NZ ODIs

Australia’s women’s cricketers are full of confidence ahead of three one-day international clashes with New Zealand following a dominant Twenty20 series win over their trans-Tasman rivals.

The Australians clinched the T20 contest in third match in Sydney on Sunday, taking an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-game series.

The teams now meet at the SCG on Wednesday in the first of three 50-over matches and allrounder Lisa Sthalekar says the Southern Stars can still find another gear.

“We’re really confident, having won the T20 series already,” Sthalekar said.

“We didn’t play as well as we would have liked and to still come away with a win … means things are going along well.

“So we’re looking forward to the longer format.”

Sthalekar, who posted career-high T20 bowling figures of 4-18 off four overs on Sunday, has the opportunity to reclaim the top spot in the ICC women’s bowling rankings but says that won’t be her focus.

“Those types of rankings are a nice bonus but the main thing I’ll be looking to do is to contribute for the team and make sure we get some of their key batters out early,” the 32 year-old said.

New Zealand’s Amy Satterthwaite scored 45 and Liz Perry added 24 to keep the White Ferns in contention on Sunday.

And while Sthalekar says New Zealand are stronger in T20 than the longer form of the game, she’s not about to get complacent.

“They’d be disappointed with how they performed in the T20s,” Sthalekar said.

“But I think the 50 overs will allow them a bit more time to get themselves into some form.

“So it’s really important that we don’t let them back in because some of their players can be quite destructive.”

The final two matches of the Twenty20 series will be held next month, following the one-day series.
