Aussie spirits soaring, says Clarke

Michael Clarke won’t be there, but he says Australia will take soaring spirits to Brisbane for the second Test against India.

Clarke is sidelined indefinitely by a hamstring injury and has even flagged the prospect his career could be over.

“There’s a chance I may never play again,” he said after Australia’s 48-run first Test triumph in Adelaide on Saturday.

“I hope that’s not the case. And I’ll be doing everything in my power to get back out on the park. But I have to be realistic as well.”

Wicketkeeper Brad Haddin is expected to take over as captain for the remainder of the four-Test series which continues at the Gabba on Wednesday.

Australia have summoned batsman Shaun Marsh to replace Clarke and also added left-arm quick Mitchell Starc to their squad.

Clarke said taking a 1-0 lead to Brisbane was a boost for the Australians.

“If you go into the Gabba 1-0 up I think that helps our confidence a lot more than if we had lost this first Test match,” he said.

“We’ll still have to be at our best. But I think winning this Test puts us in a really good position and we can take a lot of confidence out of that.”

After India produced a brave final-day run chase in Adelaide, Clarke forecast different conditions at the Gabba and then in Melbourne and Sydney for the remaining Tests.

“Conditions at the Gabba will be a lot different to what we’ve just faced here,” he said.

“The MCG looks like that has got a bit of pace and bounce in the wicket as well and SCG, who knows – one day it might spin and the next day it will be very green.

“The next three wickets we’ll have to wait and see. The weather plays the biggest part in how that will turn out.

“But this first Test match was crucial for us for a number of reasons but most importantly because setting the series up is so important.”
