Aus women eye Ashes after World Cup win

Australia’s victorious women’s cricketers have turned their attention to defending their Ashes title after returning home with a record-breaking sixth World Cup.

The youthful squad touched down at airports across the country on Thursday, with Ellyse Perry, Alex Blackwell, Rachael Haynes, Sarah Coyte and Erin Osborne arriving at Sydney airport.

The Southern Stars won their sixth World Cup with an imposing 114-run victory over the West Indies in the final in Mumbai early on Monday (AEDT).

Dual international Perry, who claimed three wickets despite battling an ankle injury, will consult doctors about the extent of the injury which almost cost her a place on the team.

“We had a pretty good plan in the final and we were fairly confident I could get through it,” Perry told reporters in Sydney on Thursday.

“I don’t think it will be something too serious down the track.”

The Southern Stars’ next assignment is the tour to England in August, where they will attempt to successfully defend the Women’s Ashes title for the first time since winning six straight series from 1984-2003.

Perry is looking forward to the tour, particularly as the men’s team will be there for support as well.

“It’s a really special tour and its something I would like to be part of,” the Australian football international said.

“It would be nice to defend the title … that’s probably what we as a squad have our eye on next.”
