Aus declare, India chase 364 runs in Test

Australia declared overnight in the first Test against India, setting the tourists a task of chasing 364 runs on day five at Adelaide Oval.

The hosts have 98 overs to bowl India out and start the four-Test series with a win.

If India manage to haul in the total on day five, it would set a new record in Adelaide.

The highest victorious fourth-innings Test total at the venue is Australia’s 6-315 in 1902.

Michael Clarke ended his side’s second innings at 5-290, a total underpinned by David Warner’s 102.

It was Warner’s second century of the match, and the sixth ton in his past 11 Test innings.

Nathan Lyon snared five wickets in India’s first dig and Warner backed the offspinner to do it again.

“It’s hard to score when the ball gets older, there’s a nice rough area out there for Nathan Lyon to bowl at,” Warner said after day four.

“We saw that in the first innings. He was hitting it virtually every delivery.

“That is going to be the key for us.

“We’re going to try to take early wickets with that new ball and once it gets older we’ll try to use the conditions.”

Warner said Lyon’s first-innings haul evidenced his improvement as a bowler.

“We have seen how much he has evolved in the past 12 to 18 months,” he said.

“He has worked hard at his game. He has now got a five-wicket haul.

“There’s no reason why he can’t come out with his tail up and help us take these 10 wickets.

“Given this wicket … there will definitely be 10 chances.”
