Western Australia coach Justin Langer has urged development coaches around Australia not to tinker with the technique of rising spinner Ashton Agar.
Agar is one of the hottest young spinners in the game, and linked with the national squad last month in order to help Australia’s batsmen prepare for their current series against India.
The 19-year-old impressed so much he ended up playing in Australia’s two warm-up games and was briefly considered for a shock Test debut.
In six first-class matches, Agar has snared 22 wickets at an average of 29.4, while he is also averaging 33.28 with the bat.
Agar’s impressive form and temperament has already put him in the thoughts of national selectors.
The left-arm spinner will continue his development at Cricket Australia’s Centre of Excellence during the off-season, and he may even link up with the Australia A side for their tour of Britain.
Langer said Agar needed to improve tactically, but there would be a danger of denting his confidence and form if anyone tried to tinker with his bowling action.
“He’s so loose in everything he does, and I mean loose in a very positive way,” Langer said.
“He’s so fluid.
“Hopefully he doesn’t get over-coached, and he learns about the strategy of playing good cricket.
“There’s areas in his batting he can tighten up a little bit. But in terms of his bowling, we just need to keep developing his strategies for how to get batsmen out.
“He’s one of those rare players you don’t want to see tampered with too much.
“The whole journey for him is going to be more about his strategy and tactics and mentally how he holds up than necessarily changing him technically too much.”
