Another McDermott to play for Queensland

Another McDermott is in line to play cricket for Queensland, only this time he is a batsman not a fast bowler.

Ben McDermott, 18, a brother of young paceman Alister and son of ex-Queensland and Australian speedster Craig, is one of three new faces in Queensland coach Darren Lehmann’s 25-man contracted squad for 2013-14.

Gold Coast opener Greg Moller and Redlands opener Alex Kemp have also won contracts.

McDermott, an Australian U19s representative, was Queensland’s Youth Player of the Year.

He was a standout for Queensland at the national titles, smashing an unbeaten 169 off 192 balls, including 13 sixes.

The Wynnum Manly first grader who played for the Queensland Academy of Sport in the Futures League showcased his talent this year on a tour to New Zealand where he not only batted but also played as a wicketkeeper.

Moller, 30, is a stylish right-hand bat while Kemp, who has already played six first class matches, including the 2011-2012 Sheffield Shield final win, has finally forced his way onto the contracted list.

Queensland Bulls contracted player list: Cameron Boyce, Joe Burns, Ben Cutting, Luke Feldman, Jason Floros, Peter Forrest, Matthew Gale, Cameron Gannon, Chris Hartley, Nathan Hauritz, James Hopes, Alex Kemp, Usman Khawaja, Chris Lynn, Alister McDermott, Greg Moller, Michael Neser, Luke Pomersbach, Nathan Reardon. Rookies: Nicholas Buchanan, Ben McDermott, Ronan McDonald, James Peirson, Nicholas Stevens. Cricket Australia contract: Ryan Harris.
