Ahmed set for Shield cricket debut

Former asylum seeker Fawad Ahmed is set to make his Sheffield Shield cricket debut for Victoria.

The 30-year-old’s remarkable Australian season will most likely reach another milestone when he makes the team against Queensland in the match for top spot from Monday at the MCG.

Clive Rose is also in line for a Shield debut while Clint McKay and Marcus Stoinis were also added to the squad.

James Pattinson is in India and John Hastings and James Muirhead were left out of the squad.

Ahmed, who played first-class cricket in Pakistan, was granted asylum last year and played for the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League.

He has also played three one-dayers for the Bushrangers and was in the squad for last month’s Shield match against SA.

Victoria sit second on the Shield ladder and equal on points with top side Queensland.

Victoria Squad (12th man to be named): Cameron White (capt), Fawad Ahmed, Scott Boland, Peter Handscomb, Michael Hill, David Hussey, Clint McKay, Rob Quiney, Chris Rogers, Clive Rose, Will Sheridan, Marcus Stoinis.
