Ahmed receives Australian citizenship

Leg-spinner Fawad Ahmed is officially an Australian citizen, meaning he is now eligible to play in the upcoming Ashes series.

Former Federal Minister for Immigration Brendan O’Connor made the announcement in Melbourne on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old played for Australia A in their England tour, but under eligibility rules he had to receive full citizenship before he could be considered for Ashes selection.

Ahmed applied for refugee status when he came to Australia four years ago.

Changes to the immigration act meant his application for citizenship could be fast-tracked.

“It’s a long journey and it was a long struggle,” Ahmed said at Tuesday’s announcement.

“The whole community of Australia – the people really supported me throughout this journey.

“It’s a victory for our sport … and for this country.

“I just can’t wait to be a citizen.

“Especially in the field of cricket, I just want to give back something to this country.”

When asked about potential Ashes selection, Ahmed said he would concentrate for the time being on his Australia A form.

“I have a great opportunity with Australia A in Zimbabwe and South Africa,” he said.

“I will try my best to perform well in those two tours and it depends on the selections.

“It will be an honour to represent Australia in the Ashes or maybe other tournaments.”
