Magic man Ashton Agar has taken his first Test wicket to put Australia in control on day three of the first Test at Trent Bridge.
Following up his match-turning 98 from 101 balls batting at No.11 on day two, Agar continued the momentum at a crucial time for Australia.
Agar removed England captain Alastair Cook, getting a leading edge from the skipper from a ball that didn’t spin much but bounced.
Michael Clarke leapt high to take a one-handed catch from slip, before teammates converged on 19-year-old debutant Agar.
It was Australia’s second breakthrough in four overs, as England suddenly went from holding the balance of power to losing two key wickets for just 10 runs.
James Pattinson started the Australian surge when he knocked Kevin Pietersen’s middle stump out of the ground in the 57th over.
England’s best batsman had played brilliantly for the first hour before clipping a Pattinson fireball back onto his own stumps.
With conditions getting increasingly more difficult for the quicks, it was the inspired effort Australia needed from their young spearhead.
Pietersen and Cook had put on a crucial 110-run partnership which started after tea on day two, when England were reeling at 2-11.
Australia were starting to look in trouble with the danger pair set, Pietersen having snapped six balls to the boundary in the opening hour.
But Pattinson produced what was needed to send Pietersen packing for 64 runs – to leave England 3-121 and the game evenly poised.
Then Agar struck to give Australia the undisputed upper hand.
Cook made 50 from 165 balls, before being undone by the West Australian spinner who can do no wrong.
England were 4-131, a lead of just 66 runs.
