Adelaide sets crowd record against India

Adelaide’s joy at setting a crowd record for a Test against India has been tempered by losing the prized Australia Day Test next year.

An Australia Day crowd of 35,081 attended Thursday’s third day of play between Australia and India at Adelaide Oval.

The crowd easily surpassed Adelaide’s previous record for a Test day’s play against India of 26,720, set on Australia Day in 2008.

But Adelaide Oval won’t host an Australia Day Test next year, with local officials hoping to stage a one-day international on the January 26 national public holiday.

Sri Lanka and South Africa will plays Tests in Australia next summer on dates yet to be disclosed.

But South Australian Cricket Association chief executive John Harnden confirmed Adelaide won’t stage an Australia Day Test.

“Next year, the (Adelaide) Test match will probably be in December,” Harnden said on Thursday.

“It’s more likely to have a one-day international or Twenty20 international here on Australia Day.

“We’re in the stages of finalising that with Cricket Australia but I can assure everybody that cricket on Australia Day is at Adelaide Oval.”

Harnden said Australia Day was “one of the great brands” on the sporting calendar.

“And Australia Day is synonymous with Adelaide Oval. It’s no different than the Boxing Day Test at the MCG,” he said.
