Perth beat Kings in NBL to stay second

The Perth Wildcats claimed a 91-74 victory over the Sydney Kings at Challenge Stadium on Sunday to remain in second position on the NBL ladder.

The Wildcats came into the contest after consecutive road losses, but were too strong for the Kings thanks to intense defence and the attacking play of forward Jesse Wagstaff.

Wagstaff continued his hot form with 25 points and eight rebounds, Kevin Lisch adding 19 points and Luke Nevill 10.

Anatoly Bose scored 16 points for Sydney, Jerai Grant 12 and Ben Madgen 10.

The loss capped off an intriguing week for the Kings with head coach Ian Robilliard stepping into the role as chief executive and assistant coach Tim Hudson taking over the reins for the first time.

The Wildcats blew the game open with a 19-3 run to begin the second quarter, their lead extending to as much as 22.

Just as they did against New Zealand and Cairns, the Wildcats gave up a big third-quarter run as the Kings scored the opening seven points, then reeled off another 7-0 streak to be within five.

The Kings never stopped fighting and edged within three points with seven minutes to go in the game, but the Wildcats responded with a dominant finish thanks to three triples from Wagstaff.

The Wildcats’ big men limited Sydney’s Julian Khazzouh to just seven points, though he did pull in 10 rebounds.

Nevill had 10 points and six boards for the ‘Cats and Matt Knight six and five after overcoming an early shoulder injury.
