Dandenong emerge as WNBL threat

Dandenong have emerged as a genuine WNBL title threat after stretching their winning streak to six with a 31-point away thumping of minor premier Adelaide.

Dandenong (14-8) would have finished third on the ladder even if they lost to the Lightning, but went out with a winning mindset.

The Rangers inflicted a 82-51 drubbing of Adelaide (18-4) who were already assured of top spot.

Adelaide will host the major semi-final next Saturday against second-placed Bulleen (15-7) who also suffered a convincing final round home loss.

The Boomers were beaten 90-65 by Logan (12-10), but it wasn’t enough to give the Queensland team a finals spot.

Their hopes of making the top five expired the previous night with a 71-58 away loss to Bendigo (12-10) who also finished just outside the playoff spots.

Townsville (13-9) will host Sydney (13-9) in Wednesday’s elimination final between the fourth and fifth placed teams after each of their final round home fixtures.

The Fire secured fourth spot with a 106-98 overtime win over Canberra (9-13) with Jess Foley contributing 29 points to the Townsville cause.

Sydney, who scraped into the finals after leading the league with a 7-0 record, finished fifth following their 79-67 victory over West Coast (2-20)

The winner of Wednesday’s clash will have to back up on Sunday at Dandenong.

Rangers coach Mark Wright was delighted by his team’s hot form, but downplayed their finals prospects.

“I don’t think we could have had a better preparation (for the finals), but it doesn’t guarantee us anything,” Wright told AAP.

“I think it would be naive to say that we’re not confident, but I’m positive that we are not over confident and I think we’re playing hard and a good brand of basketball.

“If we don’t perform next Sunday, then it’s all over.”

Dandenong kept Adelaide’s prolific centre Suzy Batkovic to just nine points.

The first quarter in Adelaide was an almighty struggle with Dandenong holding an 8-7 lead at the opening break.

“People that were there and who watched it on TV commented on how ugly it was and it was not a good standard, but I disagree with that,” Wright said.

“It was two strong teams in an arm-wrestle and I found it interesting and intriguing.”
