British NBA star Deng has torn left hand

Chicago Bulls star Luol Deng, set to lead Britain’s basketball squad at this year’s London Olympics, will be sidelined indefinitely with a torn ligament in his right hand, the NBA club said on Tuesday.

Deng, of Sudanese heritage, suffered the injury in the fourth quarter of Chicago’s victory over Charlotte last Saturday. He did not play in a 110-95 victory on Monday over New Jersey.

“It’s a bad injury and it sounds terrible, but I will be fine,” Deng said after suffering the setback.

Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said Deng will be out for “a while” and will be re-evaluated on a weekly basis, with no surgery planned but an operation not totally out of the question either.

Deng is averaging 15.9 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists a game for the Bulls, who have the best record in the NBA at 16-3.
