Perth manager weighs up ABL future

Perth Heat manager Brooke Knight faces the tough decision in the coming months of whether he wants to spend more time with his young family or create an Australian Baseball League dynasty.

Knight has been at the helm as the Heat won the first two ABL championships and admits he would love to come back next season and attempt to claim a ‘three-peat’.

But it’s not a situation he expects to be resolved in the immediate future.

“It’s not going to be an easy decision,” Knight told AAP.

“I don’t quite know yet. I’ve got to sit back and evaluate a few things. Obviously with my family in the States (makes it difficult).

“My little man is 12 years old and he’s in a great place right now, so I need to be around for him.

“But on the same hand the challenge of trying to figure this thing out again is there.”

And having seen what it takes to go back-to-back, Knight believes the club is definitely capable of winning a third title and creating a dynasty in Perth.

“It’s definitely a possibility,” he said.

Working in the Heat’s favour is the expected return next season of championship series MVP Virgil Vasquez, as well as the bulk of the title-winning squad.

“I think most of these guys are going to be back. Most of our club is primarily Australian,” Knight said.

“Other than Sydney we’re really the most Australian side. I know Virgil wants to come back, that doesn’t hurt.

“You can build around a guy like that.”

Knight was particularly pleased to see how his players recovered from the late season loss of key hitters Alex Burg and Luke Hughes.

“A couple of the middle of the order bats, with Alex Burg and Luke Hughes not being there hurt us,” he said.

“But we had guys who were willing to step up and they did a great job.

“It’s very rewarding for the whole organisation. I’m really happy for the guys, I feel like they worked hard for this.

“It’s not easy, the second time around is even harder to do.”
