Richmond coach Damien Hardwick says his young players delivered during the side’s first AFL game without their ‘Big Four’ key players since 2010.
The Tigers defeated Port Adelaide 15.9. (99) to 14.8. (92) in a nail-biter at Adelaide Oval on Saturday night.
They were without without captain Trent Cotchin, Dustin Martin, Jack Riewoldt and Alex Rance.
Hardwick said the 2017 premiers used their status as underdogs heading in to their advantage.
“It’s the ability for our guys to take that and then play with the intent that they did,” he said after the game.
He made particular mention of 18-year-old Jack Ross, who impressed with 25 disposals on debut.
“It’s his poise with the ball and his ability to get the ball and distribute the ball,” he said.
“He’s been wanting to play AFL footy for a long time and they’re the guys you love to coach.”
Now sitting at 2-2 the Tigers will take on the Swans next Saturday in Melbourne.
Hardwick said Martin, who was out due to suspension, would be available for selection, along with Bachar Houli, who is still recovering from hamstring issues.
“Selection is going to be very, very tough,” he said.
“From our point of view, we were really happy with the performances of all our lads tonight so it will be a nice week on the track.”
There is also a chance Riewoldt could be available, although Hardwick said he will likely stay sidelined because of the Tigers’ four-day turnaround between their Swans and Demons clashes.
Rance has been sidelined for the rest of the season with a knee reconstruction, while Cotchin tweaked his hamstring last week and will be unavailable for up to three weeks.
