Melbourne’s Clayton Oliver might want to ease up on the sledges after his spat with former Test cricketer Damien Martyn, teammate Max Gawn says.

The 19-year-old exchanged words with Martyn over a controversial incident during the Dees’ win over West Coast on Saturday night.

Eagles defender Will Schofield was reported for striking Oliver with an elbow but the young Demon was accused of staging his reaction to what appeared to be minimal contact.

The incident is certain to be scrutinised by the match review panel on Monday.

Oliver claimed to have been stunned by the contact from Schofield, adding that he didn’t want to be known as a “faker”.

He later clashed on Twitter with Martyn, who likened Oliver’s reaction to something he would expect from a soccer player.

“Hey Damien, you should just worry about that shot in 1994,” Oliver fired back, referring to Martyn’s costly dismissal during Australia’s Test loss to South Africa at the SCG in 1994.

Another Melbourne youngster, midfielder Tom Bugg, drew attention last week for an Instagram post in which he suggested he would target Western Bulldogs defender Jason Johannisen.

Gawn wasn’t overly concerned by either incident but suggested Oliver might regret drawing more attention to himself.

“It was a bit surprising. I wasn’t expecting Damien Martyn to pop up in my Twitter feed,” he said.

“Social media’s their own choice. We did speak to Buggy about it just a little bit but Buggy’s not going to change too much of what he’s doing and I’m sure Clayton won’t either.

“I think Clayton probably regrets sending a tweet out because of the amount of tweets he got back to him but it’s all a bit of fun.

“The clip that he sent was before he was born, which was quite interesting, so obviously (teammate) Colin Garland has given him a few cricket tips there. Maybe just (don’t) sledge for a couple of weeks.”
