Geelong will recall Daniel Menzel and Steve Johnson is in the selection mix for GWS after their teams’ AFL qualifying final goal droughts.

Cats coach Chris Scott says they erred in dropping Menzel for last Friday night’s match against Richmond, in which they only kicked five goals and lost by 51 points.

That has put them into an MCG semi-final this Friday night against Sydney, who are brimming with confidence and form.

Menzel has kicked 38 goals in 17 games this season, but his defensive pressure is an issue.

An ongoing knee injury is the big problem for Johnson, who will retire at the end of this season.

He only had eight disposals in their round-23 loss to Geelong and that cost him his spot in the team.

Like Geelong, GWS lacked any sort of forward firepower last week, only kicking six goals as they went down to Adelaide by 36 points.

The Giants could call on Johnson’s finals experience freakish skills for the Saturday night home semi against West Coast.

He and Menzel could be the X-factors that spark their teams.

GWS have several selection headaches, with No.1 ruckman Shane Mumford (foot fracture) and key forward Jeremy Cameron (hamstring) sidelined for the rest of the season.

There has been speculation that the Eagles could recall ruckman Nic Naitanui for his first game of the season, but that shock selection looks unlikely.

Geelong must replace midfielder Cam Guthrie, who suffered a calf muscle injury in the Richmond win.

Swans key defender Lewis Melican is a chance to be recalled, for what would be his first final.

Melican was a last-minute scratching from last week’s elimination final win over Essendon because of a tight quad muscle.

Star Sydney forward Lance Franklin suffered a corked thigh against the Bombers but will play against Geelong.
