Williams criticises Blues over departure

Former Carlton assistant coach Paul Williams says what he wanted most from the AFL club was the truth.

Williams has criticised the Blues over their handling of his departure from the club after they appointed Mick Malthouse as senior coach.

Carlton has also moved on fellow assistant Alan Richardson, but Mark Riley is still at the club.

The futures of the three coaches were immediately clouded once the Blues sacked senior coach Brett Ratten, with Malthouse appointed soon after.

“I very much have had a different experience over the last couple of weeks,” Williams said.

“It’s one that I hope, looking back on it, (where) the club can actually get better at handling that sort of situation.

“All we wanted from the get-go was just tell us the truth, tell us exactly what’s going on.

“Don’t try to sell us something that we know isn’t happening – and they weren’t quite able to do that.

“That was the disappointing thing … they will definitely learn from some things.”

Williams said on Wednesday he was hopeful of an imminent resolution with Carlton about his departure.

“We’re close – I know they’ve settled with Alan Richardson, so that’s all done and dusted,” he said.

“I am hoping … there will be an email that’s shot through that gives me a little bit of closure.

“That’s all I’m after.”

Williams was at Carlton for one season and said his future AFL opportunities would become clearer once Port Adelaide appointed a new senior coach.

“Once the Port Adelaide senior job is confirmed, a lot of the dominoes will fall then,” he said.

“There will be some opportunities that come up.”
