Wigg’s off-season AFL woes continue

Harrison Wigg’s AFL debut will have to wait another year after the luckless Gold Coast midfielder ruptured his right ACL at training on Thursday.

Wigg’s knee gave way early in the first quarter of an internal game at Metricon Stadium as he entered a contest for the ball.

He was able to hobble off the field, but club medical and coaching staff quickly realised the worst in what is another setback for the talented 22-year-old.

Wigg was taken by the Suns ahead of last season from Adelaide, where he went untried for three seasons.

A broken ankle in December 2017 soured his arrival after a standout SANFL season and he was only able to muster a handful of NEAFL starts for his new club last year.

Wigg had drastically improved his fitness and running ability in the off-season and is popular member of the club.

“It’s really unfortunate for Harrison, he had an injury-interrupted season with the club last year, but had put together a really strong pre-season,” Suns head of football Jon Haines said.

“We’ll make sure we provide as much support as we can for him and it’s been great today to see the way the whole football club has got around him to show their support.

“We were excited to see Harrison play some consistent football this year as we know what he can provide for us both on and off the field.”

Callum Ah Chee and Jack Bowes were among the strong performers in Thursday’s trial that saw Pearce Hanley, Jarrod Witts and Anthony Miles rested.

Meanwhile, fellow midfiedler Josh Schoenfeld injured his ankle in a tackle at training last week and will miss “the first couple of weeks of the season” after having surgery earlier this week, according to the club.
