Preview:

The last match of Round 21 is between the Western Bulldogs and Adelaide, kicking off at 4.40pm on Sunday at Etihad Stadium. At least we have been given a much
closer contest to end the round, with the Crows ever so slight favourites to take home the points. The Bulldogs have won two of their last three matches, however, and
could win here as well if they find a way to slow down Rory Sloane and Patrick Dangerfied.

Crows set to field reserves side in SANFL

The Adelaide Crows are set to field a reserves team in South Australia’s second-tier competition, the SANFL, from next season.

The move will leave Port Adelaide as the only AFL club without a reserves side from next year.

The Crows want a reserves side in the 136-year-old SANFL competition, regarded the strongest league outside of the AFL.

Adelaide coach Brenton Sanderson says the Crows are disadvantaged by the current system where their players overlooked for AFL selection play for different clubs in the SANFL.

He says that system doesn’t allow the Crows to develop their players under their desired game style.

SANFL club directors on Thursday night will act on the Crows reserves proposal, with many swayed to vote yes by Adelaide offering each club $50,000 a season for the next 15 years.

“It’s an important night for South Australian football,” Sanderson told reporters on Thursday.

“Hopefully we’re going to be able to play our seconds side in the SANFL, that would be fantastic for us and I think it would be great for South Australian football too.

“It has been written that we’re trying to upset the integrity of the SANFL – that might be seen to what it looks like from the outside.

“But we’re trying to help what is best for us, but also too what is best for the SANFL.”

The Crows reserves side would improve crowds, and thereby revenue, at SANFL games, Sanderson said.

“So many SANFL clubs are struggling financially, this could be the injection of revenue that they need to remain strong,” he said.

Sanderson said the Crows reserves would play to win “but our priority is to develop our younger players with our game style and to play our way”.

The Crows were formed and entered the AFL in 1991 as a composite team with players drawn from all SANFL clubs.
