West Coast defender Eric Mackenzie has announced his AFL retirement because of chronic injury to both his feet.

Mackenzie hasn’t been able to play this year and says there are no guarantees his feet will ever heal completely.

The 30-year-old has a rare condition that causes stiffness and inflammation in his big toes.

Mackenzie underwent more scans on Friday, with the results showing his feet hadn’t improved over the past 12 weeks.

“The time has come to put my health before trying to play football,” a tearful Mackenzie said on Wednesday as his teammates watched on.

“The feet have been giving me a lot of grief. I’ve been in pain for the last two years.

“They hurt, not just playing football, but day to day life.

“Hopefully not being on my feet all day, every day, will give them a chance to heal.

“I’d love to be able to run around with family later in life.”

Mackenzie notched 147 games for West Coast but missed out on playing in the 2015 grand final after tearing his ACL earlier that year.
