Veteran Bulldog out as coach wields axe

Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge is clearly running out of patience with the under-performing reigning premiers after axing Matthew Boyd in a major shake-up.

Boyd, a former club captain and All-Australian last season, was set to break the record for games played by a former rookie-listed player against Melbourne on Sunday.

But the 34-year-old will have to wait to pass former West Coast star Dean Cox after he was dropped on 290 career games.

The Bulldogs are ninth with a 6-5 record in a season where they have struggled to find consistent form.

Fletcher Roberts and Tim English were also dropped, while Travis Cloke is out due to soreness and Marcus Adams departs with a foot injury.

Dale Morris, Tom Boyd and Tom Liberatore were among eight additions to an extended squad for the Etihad Stadium encounter.

The Demons, yet to drop anyone from their squad, added Ben Kennedy, Sam Weideman and Jake Spencer.

All-Australian ruckman Max Gawn was given another week to prove he’s over a serious hamstring injury.

In other selection news Sydney regained speedy forward Gary Rohan for their pivotal clash with Richmond, who have named an unchanged team for the first time this season.

Swans ruckman Kurt Tippett has failed to win back his spot after being dropped for last week’s win over the Bulldogs.

Rohan, a late withdrawal from that match, returns at the expense of Lewis Melican in the only change made by coach John Longmire.

The fourth-placed Tigers, coming off their bye round, stuck with the same 22 that defeated North Melbourne in round 11.

St Kilda regain star veteran Nick Riewoldt from a knee injury and included Luke Dunstan and Jack Lonie for Friday night’s clash against North Melbourne.

Paddy McCartin (knee) and Nathan Wright (shoulder) also departed the team smashed last week by Adelaide.

North brought in Declan Mountford to replaced Ed Vickers-Willis (knee) for the Friday night clash at Etihad Stadium.

Port Adelaide host Brisbane on Saturday and coach Ken Hinkley has made three unforced changes after his side’s 70-point drubbing by Essendon.

Jasper Pittard, Brendon Ah Chee and Jimmy Toumpas were all dropped, while Jake Neade, Aaron Young and Dan Houston are included.

The Lions named the same team who upset Fremantle.

Carlton regained lively youngster Sam Petrevski-Seton and recalled Blaine Boekhorst for their encounter with an unchanged Gold Coast for Saturday night’s game at Metricon Stadium.
