Trade frenzy as AFL draft continues

Adelaide have been in the thick of the action again as the AFL draft continues amid a flurry of pick swaps.

Following from Thursday’s blockbuster deal with Carlton, the Crows have traded out pick No.24 to GWS, who swooped on Perth speedster Ian Hill.

Adelaide got pick No.28 in return (which became 30 after father-son bids) as well as the Giants’ 2019 second-round selection.

The Crows eventually used the 2018 pick on Dandenong Stingrays defender Will Hamill after they initially bid for Collingwood father-son nominee Will Kelly.

But the son of Craig and brother of Adelaide defender Jake will play for the Pies next year after they matched the bid.

Rhylee West, son of Western Bulldogs great Scott, made his way to Whitten Oval in the second round, the Dogs matching a Melbourne bid at No.26.

West Coast kicked off day two at Marvel Stadium at pick No.23 but traded the selection to Gold Coast, who added Central Districts defender Jez McLennan.

He is the third South Australian claimed by the Suns at the draft after they snared Jack Lukosius and Izak Rankine second and third respectively.

The Blues took Geelong Falcons star Sam Walsh with the No.1 pick but it was their bombshell trade with the Crows that stole the show.

With live trading in effect for the first time, Carlton shipped next year’s first-round pick to Adelaide, who gave up pick No.19 on Thursday night and their own first-round pick next year.

Blues list boss Stephen Silvagni pulled the trigger on the risky trade to take Sandringham Dragons midfielder Liam Stocker.

If Carlton struggle again next year and Adelaide bounce back into the finals, the deal will be a steal for the Crows.

The SA club could conceivably win the flag and have the No.1 pick at the 2019 draft if the Blues take the wooden spoon again.

In all, 22 players were taken in the first instalment of AFL’s new format, with the remaining rounds of the national draft and the rookie draft to be held later on Friday.
