Tippett’s slow AFL recovery for Crows

Adelaide forward Kurt Tippett will miss Sunday’s AFL game against Essendon as he continues to recover from concussion.

Crows’ coach Brenton Sanderson said while Tippett’s symptoms from his head knock two weeks ago had resolved, he was not ready to resume.

“With any sort of head injury, you have to be ultra-certain that you’re not taking any risks,” Sanderson said.

“Even if this was the grand final or any final, he wouldn’t have played this week.”

Tippett suffered his third head injury in five weeks when he clashed heads with West Coast’s Beau Waters in round 17.

He has since been tested by concussion experts and spent last weekend at home with his family on the Gold Coast, missing the Crows’ loss to Geelong.

Sanderson said Tippett was improving all the time but still had to make ground with his mental and physical conditioning and with his medical issues.

“He’s probably not at the spot medically where we want him to be but he is really recovering quickly,” the coach said.

“And also, too, just the confidence for Kurt that he can train and that he can be hit and that he can bounce up and keep playing.

“That should happen in the next 10 days but, if we’re at this point next week and Kurt’s still not in the frame of mind where he wants to get out and play, then we won’t play him either.

“The player’s welfare will be paramount.”

Despite the continued absence of Tippett, Adelaide look set to be bolstered by the return of in-form ruckman Sam Jacobs who missed the match against the Cats with hamstring tightness.

Defender Daniel Talia is also set to play despite suffering a corked thigh last weekend.
