Tigers’ Vickery out for AFL season

Richmond have lost key forward Ty Vickery for the rest of the AFL season and key defender Dylan Grimes for at least a month.

Those major injury blows come on top of the Tigers losing small forward Jake King for four weeks with a knee strain.

Vickery, a valuable part of the Tigers’ set-up due to his ability to play key forward and ruck, has missed the club’s past two games with knee soreness.

But it is a season-long shoulder complaint that has forced the Tigers to pull the pin on his season and submit him for a reconstruction.

The 22-year-old was fifth in Richmond’s best and fairest count last season, but has failed to match that impact this year.

Tigers football general manager Craig Cameron said Vickery had struggled with his shoulder since copping a heavy knock during the pre-season.

“We have tried to manage Tyrone through this season with his shoulder,” Cameron told the club’s website.

“But ultimately it was impacting his performance and the best course of action is to get it fixed now, so he is able to complete a full 2013 pre-season.”

Grimes returned against Adelaide on Saturday from a left hamstring injury and sustained further damage.

The young defender’s 2011 season was ended by a severe injury to his right hamstring, which needed surgery.

Cameron said Grimes was not expected to need surgery to fix his current injury, but the club was exploring treatment options.

Scans showed King, who was subbed off against the Crows, had sustained a grade two medial ligament strain.

In brighter news, first-year defender Steven Morris has re-signed until the end of the 2014 season.

The son of dual premiership player Kevin Morris broke into AFL ranks as a 23-year-old this year after winning SANFL club West Adelaide’s best and fairest last season.

“Steve’s story is one of perseverance, and he is one of the most driven individuals we have on our playing list,” Cameron said.
