Tigers-GWS AFL preliminary final snapshot

SNAPSHOT OF RICHMOND’S 36-POINT PRELIMINARY FINAL WIN OVER GWS:

* RESULT: Richmond 15.13 (103) bt GWS Giants 9.13 (67) on Saturday evening in front of 94,258 at the MCG

* KEY MOMENT: Daniel Rioli stood up for the Tigers when they needed a spark. After a lacklustre second-quarter spell, Rioli burst out of a pack and kicked a fantastic running goal to return Richmond to within a point of the Giants. After the break, he added two goals in a match-winning third-quarter spell, finishing with a game-high four majors

* TRIBUNAL WATCH: Will he or won’t he? Trent Cotchin faces an agonising wait to learn if he will lead the Tigers in a grand final after cleaning up Dylan Shiel in the first quarter. The Richmond skipper was clearly focused on the ball but Shiel was concussed and left the game at quarter-time. Escalating the drama, Cotchin has already been fined twice this season and will be suspended with another minor offence. Steve Johnson’s slap of Alex Rance’s face will also be assessed – although the triple premiership winner has now retired

* QUOTE: “I think it’s more a collision than a bump. I hope the rules don’t make it illegal because I see it as accidental … clearly it’s high impact so, if it’s taken up (by the match review panel), he’s going to get a week or two,” Leigh Matthews summarises Cotchin’s pickle on radio 3AW

* TREATMENT ROOM: Richmond’s medical staff will have a busy week, with Kane Lambert (foot), David Astbury (shoulder, cut head) and Dylan Grimes (dislocated finger) all suffering minor ailments. Worse, Dustin Martin attracted the attention of trainers several times in the second half. The Giants lost Shiel (concussion) and had ex-Tiger Brett Deledio troubled by a foot issue

* WHAT’S NEXT: A drought-breaking grand final. Richmond haven’t played in a decider since 1982 and haven’t won one since 1980. Opponents and minor premiers Adelaide will play off in the season finale for the first time since their last win in 1998. The Giants will watch on from the sidelines after a second-straight preliminary final exit
